ALERT: Georgia HB 1029 — Holly Springs Boundary & Council Changes

There’s a bill moving fast at the state level that Cherokee County residents need to know about.

House Bill 1029, introduced by State Rep. Brad Thomas, would:

∙ De-annex properties from the City of Holly Springs, including parts of Hickory Flat and the Sixes Road corridor

∙ Shrink the Holly Springs city council from 5 members to 4

∙ Redraw council district boundaries to reflect those changes

The bill has already passed the Georgia House and is now headed to the Senate.

Tomorrow night — Wednesday, February 18 — Rep. Thomas and Cherokee County Commissioner Richard Weatherby are hosting a town hall to discuss the bill. It runs from 6:30–8 p.m. at the historic Hickory Flat Gymnasium, 4835 Hickory Road in Hickory Flat.

Residents of Holly Springs, Hickory Flat, and the Sixes Road corridor are invited. If you live in or near those areas, we encourage you to show up and ask questions. Specifically: What happens to city services for de-annexed residents? Who benefits from reducing the council by one seat? Why is this moving so quickly?
